Jidai Knight: Why We Can Thank Jidai-geki for Star Wars

Prescript: I must say, today’s page of blogs is awfully tempting! Blogs on glasses, writing, and optimism–these are a few of my favorite things! Keep up the good work guys.

When a certain Star Wars fan steps beyond the duties of defending the Prequel Trilogy and playing trademark Jedi Knight videogames—that is, when they find themselves looking up and appreciating the sources of inspiration behind the space saga, that fan might be pleasantly surprised by the following terms (especially if they are also students of Asian film studies): samurai, jidai-geki, Mifune, Kurosawa. This certain Star Wars fan and Asian film studies student admits to not finding (on their own) the many similarities, nods, and parallels between the jidai-geki period films and the Star Wars films, but presents them here out of interest and appreciation.
